Behind every man is a powerful woman. Using the Christian perspective,
woman is made for man to support and help him in his endeavors as that
described of Adam and Eve. Behind the very powerful political figure Ferdinand
E. Marcos is his beautiful wife, Imelda Romualdez Marcos.
Imelda Marcos is a rather important
figure in the field of politics and beauty. As an orphan whose mother died in
1938, she projects a strong character despite criticisms and ridicule by
opposing leaders, but is it really who she is? The documentary narrated by her involves both the
perspectives of Imelda Marcos, herself, and her critics. The documentary
exposed the possibilities, rewards and consequences of political power over the
Philippines in a balanced manner.
One thing is for sure, she has a
unique mind of her own. She has a different philosophy in life. I, myself, am
quite confused in what to believe in. It seems that there are some parts of
Imelda’s character that makes me want to believe her. But then, I remember all
the dreadful things she has done during their political reign: all the jewelry,
the houses, the money… all the greed. This leads me to the conclusion that Imelda
Romualdez Marcos is so full of herself. She is proud of what she has done and
ignores all the mistakes she had made along the way that negates the identity
she thinks she have- a sign of folly. Considering her upbringing and all the
luxury Ferdinand has poured upon her, this behavior is quite acceptable for an
average person, but for the previous First Lady of the Philippines? I don’t
think so.
However, we cannot deny for a fact
that Imelda has helped the Philippines in her own way, by building structures that
are beneficial to the health and culture of the Filipino people. Also, she displayed actions of a
supportive spouse to Ferdinand, for she helps him in campaigning and attending
peace treaties. But, I strongly believe that Ferdinand is using Imelda to his advantage,
for she is beautiful and with this beauty it can deceive and charm people to
vote for him. Nevertheless, she remained faithful to him, even after his death, she chose to be a widow.
